Forth A Raven

In the dream, we take god out of the attic and put back the birds,

higher than human
but horizontal, the whole of their bodies

is ahead, hazarded
like a question. Every question

I have ever asked could be ground down to

Do you love me? Will I die?

   To which the birds reply,

      We came in full view

      of an island
or a continent, for we knew

      not whether.

A note on the text: In the book of "Genesis," Noah sends forth a raven and a dove to test the status of the Flood. The dove returns, but the fate of the raven remains ambiguous. - Christina Davis
